Cycling is part of the mobility bundle and is a viable alternative for some. Research has shown that cycling mode share for non-discretionary trips is likely underestimated. Still, the available data in Canada shows that a tiny minority of just one percent commute to work by bicycle. The bicycle mode share can be expanded by providing safe infrastructure for cyclists in Canada. Yet, the Dutch experience in road safety must not be overlooked, where cyclists represent 40 percent of all road fatalities.
